Top 5 Reasons to Visit ICONA This Winter

We haven’t seen a single flake of snow this winter (save one blustery day in November) as temperatures have hovered in the 40s and 50s here at ICONA Resorts. Easterners don’t visit South Jersey to crash down ski hills or snowshoe through three feet of fresh powder because our winter paradise is a beautiful, quiet, and reflective experience. Whether you need a break after a hectic holiday season or a well-deserved escape from busy city life, ICONA has three first-rate hotels in New Jersey that are ideal for wintertime relaxation and rejuvenation. Throw on a comfortable robe, pour a glass of wine, and keep reading to learn more about what makes South Jersey the perfect wintertime escape.

Peace and Quiet

Life can be challenging, stressful, and draining, which is why we detailed four scientific reasons you need a vacation back in August. Winter tends to take a toll on adults because of messy weather, tight deadlines, busy schedules, and overstuffed holiday celebrations. There’s no better time than right now to plan a peaceful winter getaway to one of our three Jersey Shore hotels. ICONA Cape May, in particular, is the number one rated hotel in Cape May, NJ, according to TripAdvisor. This elegant, calming beachfront hotel has a chic yet cozy allure, and the Atlantic Ocean views from our Oceanfront Suites are priceless.

Guest Appreciation Weekends

ICONA Diamond Beach, one of the premier Wildwood hotels, is currently offering incredible savings on Guest Appreciation Weekends now through February. As a thank you to our loyal guests, select two-night stays at Diamond Beach are starting at just $199, which includes Friday Night hors-d’oeuvres and drinks as well as breakfast for two at Coastal Blue Oceanside Bar & Grill. What are you waiting for?

Avalon Brew Pub

Not only does ICONA Avalon provides guests with an entire block of prime beach access, but it’s home to one of the premier Avalon restaurants too. Avalon Brew Pub is our prized on-site microbrewery, the perfect place for a refreshing pint and fresh-caught seafood in a unique, upscale dining atmosphere. This brewpub is a local favorite thanks to our Burger of the Week, rotating microbrews, and stylish interior decor. Our Belgian Beachbum Witbier is the perfect ale on a mild winter evening.

Cape May County Park & Zoo

The always entertaining Cape May County Zoo is a short drive from all three of our oceanfront hotels in New Jersey. This free, year-round zoo is home to North American river otters, red pandas, red foxes, American black bears, and so many more adorable animals! The park also features walking trails, a disc golf course, and an adopt-an-animal program.

A South Jersey History Tour

Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking to pass the time during a rainstorm, South Jersey has several interesting museums worth exploring during your next visit to ICONA Resorts. Many of our oceanfront cities, including Cape May, NJ, played a crucial role in World War II. All three of our oceanfront Jersey Shore hotels are minutes from a historic naval air station, a WWII lookout tower, and timeless lighthouses. South Jersey is also home to preserved 140-year-old estates and even one of the world’s only doo-wop museums. So, take a trip down memory lane this spring during your stay at one of our deluxe hotels in New Jersey.

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum

The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum in nearby Rio Grande, NJ, is hands down the best historical stop in South Jersey, only minutes from ICONA Cape May, one of the highest-rated Jersey Shore hotels. This non-profit museum is located inside historic Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport. This air station served as a dive-bomber squadron training facility during WWII. It has been restored into a 92,000-square-foot regional aviation museum. Stroll past dozens of beautiful 1940s air crafts and learn about the unique role this timeless station played in our country’s history.

Emlen Physick Estate

Another engrossing stop is the Emlen Physick Estate, less than a mile from ICONA Cape May, one of the newest oceanfront Cape May hotels. Interestingly enough, the Emlen Physick Estate is New Jersey’s only Victorian house museum. Turn back the clocks by embarking on a private tour through this 140-year-old estate. Well-known Philadelphia architect Frank Furness built the house. It was saved from demolition in 1970 by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities and also appeared in The Prowler, a 1981 cult classic slasher flick. The estate is believed by many to be haunted, not unlike many other 140-year-old homes. Tours can be combined with trolley rides by visiting their website.

WWII Lookout Tower

Whether you’re staying in the Wildwoods, Cape May, or Avalon, NJ, we highly recommend visiting Cape May Point State Park, Sunset Beach, the South Cape May Meadows, and the WWII Lookout Tower. “Fire Control Tower No. 23” was one of 15 lookout towers built around 1940 to help aim batteries of coastal artillery during the war. Tower No. 23 is the last remaining of these WWII relics. The tower is only a short stroll from beautiful Sunset Beach and the remains of the SS Atlantus.

The doo-wop museum is only 2.5 miles from ICONA Diamond Beach, one of the premier Wildwood Crest hotels. New Jersey Lighthouses: A Self-Guided Tour

New Jersey is home to 23 unique lighthouses, many of which can be discovered within minutes of ICONA Resorts. Lighthouses have become such a fascination among Americans that citizens can now join the U.S. Lighthouse Society’s “Passport Program,” one of the many ways you can hunt down the rarest beacons. Hunting for lighthouses is a popular activity for couples and families alike. Luckily for you, we have three beachfront hotels in New Jersey within six miles of a nearby lighthouse, including Cape May and Hereford Inlet.

Cape May Lighthouse

One of the main South Jersey attractions is Cape May Point State Park, only 3.5 miles west of ICONA Cape May. What sets Cape May Lighthouse apart from all other area beacons is the surrounding beauty within the state park and far beyond. The light itself, which towers 157 feet above the Earth, was first lit in 1859. Visitors can also stroll inside the lush South Cape May Meadows, enjoy a picnic on Sunset Beach, and snap photos of the SS Atlantus, the most famous concrete World War II ship in the United States.

Hereford Inlet Lighthouse

Hereford Inlet Lighthouse is approximately a five-mile journey from two of our hotels in New Jersey: ICONA Diamond Beach and Avalon. What makes Hereford Inlet so unique is its stunning architecture. Most beacons are known for their tall towers, but the preserved home at Hereford Inlet is the main draw in North Wildwood, NJ. The lighthouse was designed by famed architect Paul J. Pelz, who also designed the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington D.C., Healy Hall at Georgetown University, and dozens of other historical monuments.

East Point Lighthouse

The beautiful journey to Heislerville’s East Point Lighthouse is a large part of the allure. East Point was first lit in 1849, making it one of the oldest New Jersey lighthouses. It overlooks tranquil Delaware Bay at the mouth of the Maurice River. The fading paint that once covered the original red brick on the exterior of the lighthouse has sadly been painted over, but there’s no denying its beauty. Visitors can tour East Point, walk the serene grounds, and venture to the Strawberry Avenue Boardwalk near Bivalve, NJ.
